Layering theory: the 3-2-1 method, explained

Layering is the fastest way to look either intentional or unwell, and the difference is almost never the individual pieces. It is the count, the proportion, and one anchoring colour.

The method

Three layers, two textures, one hero colour. That is the entire framework. A tee, an overshirt, and a jacket — cotton, wool, and something technical — all quietly agreeing on a single palette. It is enough structure to look considered and enough freedom to look like you.

Layering is not addition. It is editing, done in public.

Once the maths becomes automatic you can break it on purpose, which is the only time breaking a rule ever looks good — when everyone can tell you knew it.
